Company C Contemporary Ballet provides local students and teachers with a unique opportunity to access high-quality professional ballet performances. The School Matinee is a one hour educational performance designed to provide teachers with the tools they need to meet several elements of the California Department of Education’s Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for Grades 1-5, including Artistic Perception, Creative Expression, Historical and Cultural Context, Aesthetic Valuing and Connections, Relationships [and] Applications.

Artistic Director Charles Anderson and the Company’s artistic staff will introduce the art of making dance and communicating ideas and moods through movements. They will provide a brief history of dance, discuss connections between dance and culture and show how a choreographer uses variations in pattern and rhythm to create dances. They will also describe how everyday gesture can be a source of inspiration for creating art and help students critically assess and derive meaning from works of dance.

Company C will then perform excerpts from its 10th Anniversary Season Program allowing time for the students to interact with the dancers. This will provide the students with a unique chance to understand the discipline and work ethic required of professional dancers and how those practices apply across other areas of life and careers.
