Company C Contemporary Ballet is thrilled to announce the three finalists for the New Commission Project – Choreographic Contest.

Held in honor of the Company’s tenth anniversary, the New Commission Project solicited choreographic submissions of any style from artists living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Project’s winner will have the opportunity to choreograph an original piece for Company C Contemporary Ballet, which will be performed during the Company’s 2013 season.

After reviewing the submitted works, and almost one thousand public comments on our Facebook page, Artistic Director Charles Anderson has selected three finalists for consideration: Susan Roemer, Ethan White, and Yuri Zhukov.

All of the finalists are to be congratulated on their success; however, the competition is not yet complete. After being shown two-minute excerpts of each work, the audience at the Company’s Gala performance will vote to select the winner of the New Commission Project.

Preview the finalists’ works below, and make sure to join us for our Gala performance on February 18th at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and vote for your favorite choreographer.

Susan Roemer

Susan Roemer, currently a dancer with Smuin Ballet, has over the past five years begun to hone her interest in choreography. Her submitted work, Images that Fade, explores the concept that positive and negative memories fade at different rates; she hopes that it evokes the idea that an experience may be real at one moment and be but a memory the next.

Ethan White

Ethan White has performed with Smuin Ballet, Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, Oakland Ballet, and Sacramento Ballet. Currently, Mr. White and his wife Nikki perform their choreography at a variety of venues; they have a flourishing visual arts career; and they have published children’s books that teach the joy of movement to young people. His submission, Reminisce, is the story of a woman remembering and coming to terms with past relationships.

Yuri Zhukov

Yuri Zhukov studied at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia and went on to perform with the Kirov Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet, and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Mr. Zhukov choreographed his first ballet in 1992 and has since created works for a number of companies. He is also the Artistic Director of Zhukov Dance Theatre, a San Francisco-based contemporary dance company. His work, Shared and Divided, is abstract, examining space and coexistence within it.
